The second semester of the first full-year design studio centred on the application of a tramway through Montreal’s historic waterfront, a pathway that threads the threshold between Old Montreal and the Old Port. The projectfocused on the creation of novel ways of approaching the space for two reasons. First, the current population, employment and activity levels due not warrant the costs associated with a tram, meaning additional development is required. Second, and subsequent, a new approach was needed to surpass the stifling and severely limiting abstract cultural values placed on the space. Values that through the gravity of cultural and political cautionary expectations were programming liminality in areas with incredible potential for public use. This particular project purposefully pushed conceptual boundaries and expectations. For this reason the design work is accompanied with substantial explanatory text.
