NOTE: I largely played a design-assist role in this project. It was primarily executed by Rachel Belliveau. A more in-depth explanation can be found here.
The inherent goal of this project was to bring a considerable level of design to a small low-priced condominium, in a dated building. In Calgary, this rarely happens, as most renovations in these types of spaces are designed ad-hoc, either by DIY residents, or small-scale contractors.
The primary challenge in the project was to manage the competing desires to provide multiple custom design solutions, and to maintain an extremely modest renovation budget. In the end the entire renovation was completed for under CAD $15,000, while several strategic customized solutions were achieved:
- complete replacement and improvement of all finishes,
- complete replacement and improvement of the kitchen and bathroom,
- expanding the entrance area,
- moving and expanding the bedroom closet,
- extending the kitchen to the dining area,
- providing an in-suite washer/dryer,
- fabricating custom radiant heat grills,
- two custom luminaires, and
- preserving the exposure of the masonry block walls
